At every board meeting during the school year, Mesa Public Schools will recognize a Spotlight School. The Spotlight School at the January 14 meeting was Mesa Academy for Advanced Students. Below are principal Nichole Wilfert remarks on each honoree.

Exceptional Student: Elijah Shaw
Elijah embodies the true spirit of a Mesa Academy Knight. He truly exemplifies a well-rounded IB student. He takes his learning seriously and is willing to try new things, work with any other students, and always tries his best. A dedicated student and natural leader, Elijah inspires those around him with his fairness, kindness, and humility. Whether excelling in the classroom or leading on the basketball court, he consistently earns the trust and respect of his peers, who look to him for guidance and support.
In spite of being born with a heart condition that required him to have a baby pacemaker he has gone on to win championships and awards on the court. He was even selected to show off his basketball and interview skills in commercials for the 2024 Final Four Tournament. The average 13 year old might share this excitement openly. But due to Elijah’s humble approach to life, this is the first most of us have been made aware of such an accomplishment. His caring and considerate nature, paired with his unwavering commitment to excellence, make Elijah an invaluable member of our school community and a role model for all.
